Ankle-Foot Rehabilitation
Ankle sprains comprise 15% of all athletic injuries. The lateral ligamentous complex is most commonly involved in most ankle sprains. Majority of patients fully recovery but 20-30% develop chronic symptoms or instability. The ankle is a hinge joint, deriving its stability from multiple ligaments and bones.
Common mechanical dysfunctions that influence the ankle and foot:
- Talar restriction with inability to externally rotate will limit ankle dorsiflexion.
- Restoring joint play mobility at the talus will restore ankle orsiflexion range of motion.
- The subtalar joint articulates the talus with the calcaneous with three facets on the superior surface of the calcaneus.
- Cuboid subluxation can mimic plantar pain along the peroneus longus tendon which is mistaken for plantar fasciitis. The cuboid is the cornerstone for all three arches of the foot.
